Financial Dictionary
Date
The trading date for a quote or the day a news headline or research comment was released.
For Mutual Funds: The date is as of close of business the previous day.
For Margin Violations: The date the violation occurred.
Date Range
A view of an account's activity for a specified period of time up to the maximum available (six weeks for central asset accounts and 16 weeks for retirement accounts).
Day High
The highest reported trading price for a stock during the current trading session. When the market is closed, this number indicates the highest price for the entire most-recent trading session.
Day Low
The lowest reported trading price for a stock during the current trading session. When the market is closed, this number indicates the lowest price for the entire most-recent trading session.
Day Order
An order which will expire at the end of the trading day if it is not executed.
Days to Expiration
Calendar days until the specified option contract expires.
Debenture
A long term corporate debt instrument issued without collateral.
Debit Balance
The amount of funds that you owe for transactions made in your account.
Debit Card
This plastic card looks like a credit card and is used like a credit card, but it withdraws money from your account at a financial institution immediately when you buy something or get money from an ATM.
Default
When a debtor fails to either repay interest or repay the principal of a loan.
Default Risk
The possibility that a bond issuer will default, i.e. fail to repay principal and interest in a timely manner. Also called credit risk.
Deposit Note
Instruments issued by banks with fixed rates of interest typically paid monthly. Also referred to as Callable CDs, Deposit Notes have optional call provisions and are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Deposits
Deposits are incoming funds received from an external source that are new funds. Examples include check deposits, retirement plan contributions, transfer and rollover deposits, and incoming ACH deposits. Fed wires are included in their own separate category.
Description
A description of a security including the name of the issuer, type (equity or corporate bond, etc.) and other information.
Discount
The difference between a bond's current market price and its face or redemption value.
Discount Bond
A bond which is sold at a price below its face value and returns its face value at maturity.
Discount Yield
The yield achieved by dividing a security's discount by its face value, and multiplying that number by the approximate number of days in the year (360) divided by the number of days left to maturity.
Distributing Syndicate
Group of investment banks and brokerage firms that come together to assist the distribution of a security offering.
Distribution Period
The time between the declaration date and the record date, usually a few days.
Diversification
Spreading of risk by putting assets in several categories of investments.
Dividend
Distributions of earnings to shareholders that are paid out of income. For a security, they are usually pro-rated by class and paid in the form of cash or stock.
Dividend Per Share (Div/Share)
A company's dividend paid to shareholders divided by the number of shares outstanding.
Dividend Yield
The annual percentage of return paid on each share of each class of stock as a percentage of the market price of those shares.
Dividends
Current- Indicated Dividends per share, annualized, for current year. Indicated dividend/yield per share based on current rate (calculated on a daily basis).
Estimated- Indicated Dividends per share estimates, annualized, for next year. Indicated dividend/yield per share based on estimate for next year (calculated on a daily basis).
Dollar Cost Averaging
A technique for investing in stocks or mutual funds where the investor buys a fixed dollar amount of securities at regular time intervals. In effect the investor is able to buy more shares when the price is low and fewer shares when the price is high.
Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)
Price-weighted average of 30 actively traded blue chip U.S. stocks.
Durable Power of Attorney
A legal document granting authority to an individual to conduct legal business on another person's behalf. This authority is not affected by subsequent disability.
