Gain (Loss)
The difference between the purchase price and the sale price of an investment.

For Performance: Change in market value of priced securities within a portfolio for a given period.

Gains
Annual capital gains distribution made by a mutual fund.

General Municipal Debt Funds
Fund invests at least 65% of assets in municipal debt issues in the top four credit ratings.

General U.S. Government Funds
Fund invests at least 65% of fund assets in U.S. government and agency issues.

General U.S. Treasury Funds
Fund invests at least 65% of fund assets in U.S. Treasury bills, notes, and bonds.

Gift Tax
A tax imposed on the donor for gifts in excess of $10,000 per person per year. The tax is levied on gifts to individuals other than a spouse.

Global Funds
Fund invests at least 25% of its portfolio in securities traded outside of the United States and that may own U.S. securities as well.

Going Public
Term used to describe the initial public issuance of shares of a privately held company.

Government Bonds
A 10-year or longer U.S. government-issued debt security that carries the highest rate available.

Government Obligations
U.S. government debt instruments (Treasury bonds, bills, notes, savings bonds)

Grant
A right granted under an employee stock option plan to purchase shares of company stock at a fixed price for a specified period of time.

Grant Price
The set price at which an optionee can buy company stock under the terms of an employee stock option plan.

Gross Income
Income earned before all taxes and other deductions, such as 401(k) contributions, are taken out.

Growth Fund
A fund that focuses on capital appreciation rather than income as its investment objective.

Growth Stock
Stock of a company which is growing earnings and/or revenue faster than its industry or the overall market. Such companies usually pay little or no dividends, preferring to use the income instead to finance further expansion.

Guarantee Bonds
Issued by a company where the interest and principal are guaranteed by a larger affiliated company (holding company).

Guarantee Period
The period during which the insurance company guarantees that the policy will remain in force regardless of investment experience. Taking policy loans may reduce the guarantee period.

Guarantor
The source, other than the issuer, who guarantees payment of principal, interests or dividend.
